Consider the Hijab: Blogging Against Racism

I found this story about a Muslim girl who went to school without her hijab one day on Pete's blog. It's a powerful story of courage that made my sinuses well up, left me in awe and feeling all warm and fuzzy inside.

I like humans

This one has previously been debated to death over at Lofty's, Xxxtine's and several other places but a recent event has gotten me thinking about it again.

Last week, a guy in my class (let's call him Mr. C, for "Chinese") asked if I already had a date for the grad ball. I told him that I invited Mike to be my guest. That eventually led to him complaining that "Chinese guys already have a hard enough time finding girlfriends... it doesn't help when white guys are taking our kind... shame on you for dating a white devil, blah-blah-blah..."

Mike likens Mr. C's comment to the "girls always go for jerks" type of remark, but I find it more offensive than that. Just because I'm Chinese and he's Chinese, it doesn't mean that Mr. C is entitled to me. I can date whom ever I deem worthy, thank you very much.

For the record, just because my current boyfriend is Caucasian, it doesn't mean that I favour European men. It doesn't really matter what their ethnicity may be, as long as they're nice to me. Observe:

pie chart

Of the people I have dated, they have been mostly Asian, followed by European and then a potpourri of other cultures. Due to the small sample size of the number of people I've ever dated (3 to be exact), I can't exactly say that my choices in men have been representative of the ethnic distribution of Southern Ontario. Even so, I've got pretty good coverage thanks to interracial marriages. Love only gives birth to wonderful things. If generations before me have done it, I'm pretty sure I can pull it off too.

Sexism in engineering ritual at the University of Waterloo

The iron ring is worn on the little finger of the working hand of engineers who swear an oath of upholding a code of engineering ethics and utmost professionalism. On February 22nd, I will be getting ringed at the Ritual of the Calling of an Engineer. The actual ceremony takes place in the evening, but this momentous occasion is usually marked by a day-long celebration.
